garden room extension, burton lazars
This extension to the existing kitchen provides a sun room as a link to the garden with space for an informal dining area. The overall scale and shape suits the existing house, stepping down to relate to the garden and minimising its overall height in relation to the existing building. Angled walls open up to the garden and to a raised terrace area and maximise views from the existing patio doors. The solid roof frames the view and gives an open feel, allowing more light to fall into sun room and kitchen; its insulation controls the temperature in summer and winter.
Glazed areas in both roof and walls join the extension to the existing building. The subtle connection allows views through from each corner of the house and provides additional light for the kitchen. To maximise the light the existing window opening has been increased creating a generous connection between the spaces and sun light penetrates deep into the kitchen through the skylight. A solid back wall construction anchors the roof and offers wall space for shelving.
