empod - national marine aquarium
The Empod is a virtual electron microscope which allows users to study a range of organisms found in the oceans. Tandem designed and built the exhibit with i-DAT and the Electron Microscope Unit from the University of Plymouth creating the digital interface.
The concept for the stand is to help visualise the magnifying potential of the microscope through a dynamic form that shows the scaling in size at each 10x magnification. The shape also has abstract references to fish with its overall form and slatted fin structure. The heavy microscope element is suspended by a perspex cube exposing the complex technology.
