The client

A young family with small children.

Why they contacted us

They had seen a flat conversion project we had done and were impressed with the overall design how we had created a sense of space with ample stoarge, in a relatively small flat.

What they wanted to achieve

The project consisted of re-planning the ground floor of a detached house to meet the needs of a growing family. The existing layout was poorly planned making it difficult and inconvenient to use. They wanted a design that allowed for a more sociable lifestyle with the young children more easily supervised.

What we did

The design solution provides a larger kitchen, which is open to a large dining and living room.
Two rooms, which were difficult to inhabit before have been changed into a large dining room. The circulation area has been simplified with two large built-in storage cupboards facilitating the more open plan layout. The size of the existing kitchen has been increased by demolishing some externally accessed stores and by extending the existing lower ceiling past the new kitchen worktop and breakfast bar. This creates a balanced relationship with the dining room and provides additional high level storage space. Natural light is brought into the hall from the dining room through a large sliding glass door. With a frameless opening the door can be concealed, connecting the hallway to the generous space.

Our Involvement

We drew up detailed construction plans and helped the client get quotes for the general building work. Tandem oversaw the constrcution of the project and fitted the sliding glass door, the large storage cupboards and various storage elements in the kicthen.
