The project consisted of re-planning the ground floor of a detached house to meet the needs of a growing family. The existing ground floor accommodation was poorly planned making it difficult and inconvenient to use. Designed in the 1930’s it was at odds with the current owner’s lifestyle. With a passion for food and two young children the clients wanted to make the most of the existing space. The design solution provides a larger kitchen, which is open to a large dining room. It allows for a more sociable lifestyle with the young children more easily supervised.
The large dining room has been created from two rooms, which were difficult to inhabit before. The central circulation has been rationalised with two large built-in storage cupboards facilitating the more open plan layout. The size of the existing kitchen has been increased by demolishing some externally accessed stores and by extending the existing lower ceiling past the new kitchen worktop and breakfast bar. This creates a balanced relationship with the dining room and provides additional high level storage space. Natural light is brought into the hall from the dining room through a large sliding glass door. With a frameless opening the door can be concealed, connecting the hallway to the generous space.
