The client
One of the doctors at the GP surgery.
Why they contacted us
She had seen a flat conversion by Tandem for her neighbour, and liked the spatial solution, the design language, materials and detail.
What they wanted to achieve
The doctor spends most of her time in her consulting room, either seeing patients or working on the computer, and wanted it to be both a nice space to work as well as friendly and welcoming for the visiting patients. The existing arrangement did not provide sufficient and suitable storage space, the atmosphere of the neon-lit space was not very welcoming.
What we did
We used the traditional curtain that provides privacy for examinations and extended it to from a backdrop for the patient seating area, screening part of the wall shelving. New cupboards and drawer units under the L-shaped fitted desk together with the wooden shelves now provide sufficient storage space.
A slatted cedar screen with opening panels conceals the radiator and boxed ducting and at the same time creates a unified wall surface with the vertical arrangement and relief alluding to a forest of trees. Locally grown cedar has been used for the joinery items, which all have been designed, manufactured and installed by Tandem. The desk is surfaced with natural linoleum, a hardwearing natural and userfriendly material.
Our Involvement
We worked closely with the client during the design, our advice included layout, materials, colours and lighting. To make the furniture elements we used wood supplied by the client. The redecoration and installation was undertaken over a weekend to avoid any interruptions and interference with the surgery.
